Our Animals

Here at Lilyfields Kauawhiawhi Farm we love our animals!

We have several “rare breed” species as well as some more common farm animals. Read on to discover the animals you are able to see when visiting on our display garden open days or other times by arrangement.

The Welcome Crew

A.K.A the dogs.
We have two friendly dogs who love to greet visitors to the farm. Russ the Jack Russel Terrier considers himself the boss and is usually found supervising whatever work is going on. Rory is an elderly crossbreed who prefers snoozing on the couch these days!

Miniature Horses

Miniature horses are just what they sound like- horses in miniature size! They are not ponies which have a different body shape to horses. They have wonderful natures and make great pets. We have two beautiful minis- Larry and Rocket. They love going for walks especially down the river. You can learn more about miniature horses by clicking the link below.

We also have a gorgeous full size horse too- Jules. She is an ex-racehorse who loves her semi-retired life here with us. Tessa tries to get out riding her when the farm is not too busy. Otherwise she spends her days keeping the wee boys in line!

Pitt Island Sheep

These quirky sheep evolved from merinos left on Pitt Island (in the Chathams group) as food for potential ship wrecked sailors. During their isolation there they have developed excellent disease resistance, strong hooves and a partial ability to shed their wool making them an excellent choice for lifestyle blocks. The rams have impressive large curled horns. Their fine, coloured wool is excellent for crafters and they are rather tasty eating too- just don’t tell Lambo and Snowflake that! You can learn more by clicking the link below.

We often have some young stock available for sale. They are easy care sheep but do require sturdy fences and adequate grazing. Email Lilyfields@xtra.co.nz for expressions of interest or more information.

Kunekune Pigs

Our Kunekune pigs have big personalities to match their big tummies! These NZ rare breed pigs are known for their placid nature and are easily trained. They are very clean and can even be house trained. Frank, our boar, was known to open the sliding door into the lounge at his previous home and make himself comfortable in the dog’s bed! Miss Piggy has recently had a litter of beautiful wee babies and Piggy Sue is also expecting. We are taking expressions of interest for the piglets to go to pet only homes. They require sturdy fencing, adequate grazing and lots of love & pats. They are sociable animals and need at least one other Kunekune companion. Email Lilyfields@xtra.co.nz for expressions of interest or more information.

Pekin Ducks

These noisy characters are delightful to watch waddling around or splashing in their pool. They love to swim and fossick around searching for tasty bugs in the grass. Pekin ducks are too heavy to fly and are content to act as pest control in our orchard.

Cows

We have friendly hand reared calves who love attention, especially head and neck scratches. If you happen to have a handful of feed pellets you will be their new best friend!
